Narasimha is one of the ten avatars of the Supreme Lord Vishnu. Goddess Lakshmi is the consort of the God Narasimha, so she is sitting on the lap of Narasimha. As per hindu mythology, Hiranyakashipu was an asura king. He took a strong penance against lord shiva for deathless life in all three worlds. Later Hiranyakashipu acquired all three worlds and troubled the devotees of lord Vishnu. He dominated everyone and started saying that he had no equals. To conquer this demon, Lord Vishnu manifested himself as Narasimha and killed him by sitting at the threshold.
So people believe that Narasimha and Lakshmi will never fail to save their devotees from struggles and celebrate Lakshmi Narasimha Jayanti, that falls in the month of May or June.
